When Handel was 54 years old, he had a stroke. After that his right arm was paralysed for a while so he could not perform, but he made an excellent recovery after six weeks at a health spa in Aix-la-Chapelle. At this time he started to write oratorios instead of operas. In 1742 (about 3 years later after stroke) his famous work oratorio “Messiah” was first performed in Dublin.
